Marine Mammal Sightings Map (19K)

Note: Gray Whales are not plotted on the chart. Numerous California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, and Southern Sea Otters are seen on all trips, and also are not plotted.

Humpback Whales remain the only large baleen whale in our area during this reporting period. Blue Whales should make their appearance soon. Whale watching has been spectacular with dense feeding aggregations of Humpbacks, Pacific White-sided Dolphin, Long-beaked Common Dolphin, California Sea Lions and thousands of seabirds seen almost daily.

More about the feeding aggregations is in our June 1998 Special Feature. How long this degree of interspecies feeding behavior will continue is hard to estimate, but if you want to see it, you should consider a whalewatching trip now.

The sightings plotted above were compiled by Richard Ternullo for the period 5/26/98 to 6/25/98. Sightings reported by D. Lemon, N. Lemon, B. Lucas, Monterey Bay Whale Watch, S. Munro, H. Neece, R. Ternullo, D. Uyeda, W. Williamson.
